    Position Overview

Interior Gas Utility (IGU) was created in 2012 as a community response to Fairbanks’ dual crisis of high heating costs and poor air quality. Our mission is to bring affordable, clean-burning natural gas to the largest number of residents and businesses in the Fairbanks North Star Borough safely, economically, and as quickly as possible.
The Business Development & Outreach Manager is responsible for growing IGU’s customer base by converting users to natural gas. This means direct outreach to homeowners, landlords, and businesses; building relationships with contractors, lenders, and community partners who influence heating decisions; and managing IGU’s public presence. The role reports directly to the General Manager and is a key driver of IGU’s long-term financial sustainability.

    Key Responsibilities

    Customer Conversion & Business Development

    • Identify and target homeowners, landlords, and commercial property owners currently not using natural gas who are within or adjacent to IGU’s service area.
    • Conduct direct, including door-to-door canvassing, phone, email, and community events to educate potential customers on the cost and environmental case for switching to natural gas.
    • Build and maintain relationships with heating contractors, plumbers, lenders, and FNSB Air Quality programs that influence fuel conversion decisions.
    • Manage a pipeline of prospective customers and track progress from initial contact through service connection.
    • Coordinate with Operations and Construction to prioritize high-density conversion opportunities and communicate realistic timelines to customers.
    • Support customers through the onboarding process, working with billing and field staff to ensure a smooth transition.
    • Represent IGU at community events, fairs, expos, and public forums.

    Marketing & Communications

    • Maintain IGU’s website, social media channels, and external communications to ensure content is current, accurate, and compelling.
    • Develop campaigns targeted at fuel conversion, incentive programs, air quality events; in coordination with the General Manager.
    • Create materials (flyers, presentations, applications, digital content).
    • Monitor public sentiment and media coverage; flag anything relevant to the General Manager.
    • Prepare presentations and data summaries for the Board of Directors as requested.

    Reporting & Analysis

    • Track and report conversion metrics, outreach activity, and pipeline status on a regular basis.
    • Analyze customer and market data to identify gaps, opportunities, and the effectiveness of outreach strategies.
    • Manage the departmental budget.

    Qualifications

    Required:
    • 5+ years of experience in sales, business development, community outreach, or a related field or a relevant degree plus demonstrated results.
    • Proven ability to build relationships and move people from skepticism to action.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills; comfortable presenting to small groups and community audiences.
    • Self-directed, organized, and accountable; this role requires initiative, not supervision.
    • Valid Alaska driver license and clean driving record (fieldwork required).
    Preferred:
    • Experience in energy, utilities, construction, or a related industry.
    • Familiarity with Fairbanks community, contractors, and the local heating market.
    • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite or Canva for content creation.
    • Basic understanding of natural gas infrastructure, home heating systems, or utility easements.

    Physical Requirements

Primarily office-based with regular fieldwork. Must be able to drive, canvass neighborhoods on foot, and occasionally lift up to 25 pounds. Background check required.
