What is Alaska Sea Grant doing in West Africa?
-
Illegal and unregulated fishing threatens the health of marine turtles, mammals, and fisheries worldwide. Kate Wynne will described her work with NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) to reduce this threat by training fishery observers in several West African countries.
Besides being a wonderful role model for girls, Kate is the Alaska Sea Grant Marine Advisory Program's Marine Mammal Specialist and lives in Kodiak, Alaska. She has authored two marine mammal field guides and has trained hundreds of fishery observers to accurately identify the mammal species that interact with US and international fisheries. She also untangles whales caught in fishing nets and lines!
