Underwater World of the Aleutian Islands
-
The ocean waters around the Aleutian Islands hold many secrets. One of the few underwater explorers who has spent most of his scientific career uncovering those secrets is University of Alaska Fairbanks marine biologist and scuba diver, Reid Brewer. The West Point educated former Army helicopter pilot will be in Fairbanks on Tuesday, June 19 to give a talk and show rare photos and video about recent underwater discoveries he and fellow divers have made in the Aleutians, and describe the largely unexplored nearshore underwater marine ecosystem along the chain. His lively presentation laced with humor will include what it is like to scuba dive for king crab, venture through unvisited kelp forests and visit with northern fur seals.
Based in Unalaska as UAF's Sea Grant Marine Advisory Program field agent, Brewer co-authored the national award winning photo book, Sea Life of the Aleutians: An Underwater Exploration.
Families and visitors to Alaska are welcome and encouraged to attend.
Brewer's lecture is one in a summer-long series of weekly talks by Alaska Sea Grant and Cooperative Extension Service faculty in the UAF Summer Sessions Land and Sea Lecture Series. http://www.uaf.edu/summer/summer-events/land-and-sea/#june26Underwater World of the Aleutian Isla...Date and Time
