Remaking Maps / Creating Legends Map Sculptures
-
Free First Friday art show featuring new works by Mary Matthews. Mary has been a local active artist in Fairbanks since 1980. She has been known variously as the Gutsy Artist, the wasp nest lady, the leaf lady, and currently the map lady. Often her work mixes media and features gowns and dresses of recyled materials and large installations of whatever happens to be on her mind. New pieces featured in this show include: two evening gowns made of satellite photo maps, a large map tree with tree house climbed by sassy female explorers heading for the top. In addition there will be a series of water color images of women in the wilderness in fashionable attire painted on topograhical maps. Her work has won numerous awards including a Rasmusson Individual Project Award, and her 2012 Geographical Bodies show was successfully crowd source funded through USA Artists.
