Update on UAF's Unmanned Aircraft Program
Ro Bailey, Associate Director for Policy, Alaska Center for Unmanned Aircraft Systems Integrations
With unmanned aircraft, or drones, becoming ever more visible and viable for commercial use, the role of UAF's UAS program and test site also is growing in importance. Working with the FAA to research safe operating processes and rules, collecting flight data as well as systems information, and assisting in educating the public are all roles UAF has taken on as part of working to integrate UAS into the national airspace system in a safe and effective way. Alaska has embraced its role as leader in the field, with strong partnerships between the legislative side and its task force, state agencies like DOT Aviation, and the Alaska Region of the FAA as well as the military and commercial interests. Recent projects have demonstrated how this partnership can benefit our knowledge, our commercial capability, and advance the state of knowledge on critical Arctic issues.
