General Membership Luncheon
Featured Guest Speaker:
Honorable Niesje Steinkruger
Alaska Superior Court 4th Judicial District (retired)
Retired judge Niesje Steinkruger served as a Superior Court Judge in Fairbanks for 19 years. She attended college and law school at the University of Nebraska and Sophia University in Tokyo.
Steinkruger, and her husband Roger Brunner, came to Fairbanks in 1976. She practiced law in Fairbanks before becoming a judge, first in private practice with such well known Fairbanks attorneys such as Lloyd Hoppner, Julian Rice and Jim Dewitt, then later as a civil servant working for the state Attorney General’s office civil section as a Public Defender. Steinkruger was appointed to the bench to serve on the Fairbanks Superior Court by Governor Cooper in 1988, and later appointed as state Superior Court judge for 4th Judicial District in 2003.
Steinkruger and her husband have raised two daughters in the Fairbanks community and are now proudly (and actively) grand-parenting three pre-schoolers. Steinkruger continues to be active in the Fairbanks community in children and family issues, attorney services issues, and criminal law. For the last 4 years, Steinkruger has been actively engaged in an archive research on "Lost Alaskans" who were sent by Mental Commitment to Morningside Hospital in Portland, Oregon during the pre-statehood years. She has also been working on Fetal Alcohol eradication, criminal sentencing, and technology changes so that law enforcement officers can access bail conditions of defendants from their lap top in their cars.
