    The GIS Technician creates maps, reports and maintains the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) database by reviewing engineering drawings and conducts field verification using Global Positioning System (GPS) to ensure the accuracy and consistency of the GIS Information. The GIS Technician supports the GIS team, project teams and any other DU employee/group in GIS or mapping requirement.

    Starting Hourly Range: $36.71 - $37.93 DOE

    This is an in-person position located in Anchorage or Fairbanks, Alaska

    What you will do

    • Maintains the GIS database and perform updates and edits.
    • Prepare maps and reports as delegated, requested, or needed.
    • Conducts GPS field collections of utilities.
    • Review and verify mapping data or themes provided by government agencies or private sector contractors for accuracy and consistency, modifying and correcting database values as necessary.
    • Assist in the evaluation, development, and adaptation of computer software applications for capture, conversion and maintenance procedures related to GIS.
    • Assist in identify and research external sources of hardware, GIS software, and resources related to the position.
    • Participate as an essential member of project teams to collaborate with other professionals such as surveyors, engineers, or project managers in analyzing geographic data, updating, submitting corrections, and similar tasks.
    • Prepare for and conduct GIS data exchange with the Government on routine basis which includes updating data fields, creating maps, preparing printable material, and organization of materials.
    • Must comply with Doyon Utilities’ safety requirements.


    Conditions of Employment
    Must pass a pre-employment drug test, random drug test thereafter in accordance with the published policy of Doyon Utilities. Must have a valid driver's license issued by the State of Alaska. Must be eligible to work on a military installation in Alaska. Eligibility to work on a military installation includes compliance with Department of Defense mandates with respect to employee background and health directives.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor's Degree in Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Information Technology, or a related field. May substitute formal training with adequate experience. Preferred
    • 1 year experience in an information systems environment, including systems analysis, design, integration, and implementation. Required
    • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Experience with ArcGIS, ArcPro, ArcMap, ArcSDE.
    • Good analytical and problem solving skills.
    • Experience with GPS data collection.
    • Able to work with minimal supervision.
    • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to work in a team environment.
    • Enthusiastic about learning, pushing technical limits and finding new solutions.
    • Familiarity with Spatial Data Standard for Infrastructure and Environment (SDSFIE).
    • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
