Accounting Intern

The Accounting Intern will support the accounting team with daily operations, financial reporting, and process improvement initiatives. This role provides hands-on experience in accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliations, and general ledger functions. The Intern will gain exposure to how a finance and accounting department operates in a public utility environment.Starting Wage: $20.07 per hour
This is an in-person position located in Fairbanks, Alaska.
This is a temporary position for up to 1,000 hours.
What you will do- Assist with bank, credit card, and balance sheet reconciliations
- Help prepare journal entries and maintain supporting documentation
- Participate in month-end and year-end closing activities
- Support audit sample requests and documentation preparation
- Maintain organized accounting files and records
- Assist with compiling financial data for internal reports
- Run queries or exports from ERP/accounting software
- Support data validation and clean-up projects
- Assist with invoice processing, matching, coding, and obtaining approvals
- Help maintain AP files and prepare documentation for payments
- Support AP month-end activities
- Prepare customer invoices and assist with payment application
- Follow-up on outstanding receivables as directed
- Assist with AR reconciliations and aging reports
- Assist with special projects assigned by the Controller or accounting staff
- Perform general office tasks such as scanning, filing, copying, and document organization
- Participate in team meetings and provide status updates
- Learn, adopt, and apply safety programs
Conditions of Employment
Must pass a pre-employment drug test, random drug test thereafter in accordance with the published policy of Doyon Utilities. Must have a valid driver's license issued by the State of Alaska. Must be eligible to work on a military installation in Alaska. Eligibility to work on a military installation includes compliance with Department of Defense mandates with respect to employee background and health directives.Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent Current junior or senior enrolled full-time in an Accounting or Finance program. Required
- Current college-level junior or senior. Must have completed all Intermediate Accounting courses with at least a B-grade. Required
- 1 year Office or accounting experience. Preferred
- Basic knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles. (required proficiency)
- Basic knowledge of accounting or ERP systems (e.g. MS NAV, SAP, Oracle, etc.) (preferred proficiency)
- Ability to understand and follow written and verbal communication and instructions (required proficiency)
- Ability to communicate and work with diverse groups of people (required proficiency)
- Ability to effectively communicate in person, over the phone, or video (required proficiency)
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality in all matters (required proficiency)
- Ability to work independently and collaborate within a team (required proficiency)
- Ability to work within multiple deadlines (required proficiency)
- Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail (required proficiency)
- Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook (required proficiency)
- Excellent time management skills (required proficiency)
- Experience with SharePoint, preferred (preferred proficiency)
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills (preferred proficiency)
