"Listening Across Generations: Gender and Healing in Post-Genocide Rwanda" with guest speaker Christine Kindler
-
Following the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, local conversations about the genocide have often been silenced or minimized. In partnership with a local grassroots organization, we implemented Peace Conversation Circles (PCC) to foster intergenerational dialogue between older adults who directly experienced the genocide (i.e., survivors, génocidaires, and bystanders) and Rwandan youth. Guided by a participatory action research framework, we collaborated closely with survivors, including women who experienced sexual violence, to ensure the process was safe, inclusive, and empowering. Across these dialogues, both older adults and youth reported a greater capacity for perspective-taking and an increased willingness to engage in intergenerational conversations about the genocide. The project sought not only to provide space for local dialogue, but to do so in ways that affirm the voices and agency of those whose stories have too often remained untold.
All are welcome to this engaging talk by UAF Assistant Professor of Psychology, Christine Kindler, followed by a brief program meeting. Pizza, brownies, and drinks will be provided! RSVPs are encouraged but not required. Contact Dr. Carol Gray at cjgray5@alaska.edu.
