CARVALHO’S JOURNEY: Saturday, March 4, 7:30 pm Well Street Art Company. In 1853 Solomon Carvalho, a painter and photographer who had never saddled a horse survived grueling conditions along the journey from New York through Kansas, Utah, New Mexico, Colorado and California. His experiences as an observant Sephardic Jew on the western trail grant a window into the inter-ethnic cultural exchanges commonplace in this period. Traveling alongside mountain men, pioneers, Native Americans and Mormons, Carvalho produced beautiful art: daguerreotypes that became the lens through which the world experienced the American West. Carvalho’s funny and humanist writings come to life along with voiceovers by acclaimed actors and first-person accounts by John Fremont, their Native-American guides, and 19th century luminaries such as Brigham Young, with whom Carvalho had a unique audience in Salt Lake City.
