First Friday with Devante Owens "Seaing Stars"

"While I am technically an “Alaskan Artist”, my paintings, prints, and drawings are the result of living in a landlocked and isolated environment rather than a reflection on Alaska’s natural beauty. Instead of gaining inspiration from the scenic landscape and abundant wildlife, I turn my focus to the sea and stars, subjects that always felt out of reach growing up. Living in interior Alaska, we are always subtly reminded of these topics. Our prized salmon swim in rivers that connect to the ocean, while the aurora we are known for is caused by charged particles colliding with our atmosphere. By combining these subjects in surreal scenes, there are endless possibilities for generating new work. For the show, I wanted to have fun creating pieces that explored recreational activity within the scope of my style. Alongside the latest pieces, I have included prints from my undergrad.
