Fairbanks North Star Borough Named 2023 ‘Great American Defense Community’

Washington, D.C. – Fairbanks North Star Borough, home to Fort Wainwright, Eielson Air Force Base, Fort Greely and Clear Space Force Station, is one of five communities across the country selected as a 2023 Great American Defense Community.

The Association of Defense Communities (ADC) announced the five selected communities in conjunction with USAA, the program’s official sponsor, at the Defense Communities National Summit earlier this month. The 2023 class also includes the city of El Paso, Texas; greater Omaha, Nebraska; the Montgomery-River Region in Alabama; and the Fort George G. Meade region in Maryland.
“We are incredibly excited to honor Fairbanks North Star Borough as a 2023 Great American Defense Community,” ADC President Karen Holt said. “Fairbanks North Star Borough is a great example of how communities are working tirelessly to ensure America’s military can be proud of where they call home.”
The Great American Defense Communities program was launched by ADC in 2016 to recognize and celebrate the communities and regions that support military installations for their exceptional commitment to improving quality of life for military.

“I am humbled and honored that the Fairbanks North Star Borough has been recognized as a 2023 Great American Defense Community,” Mayor Bryce Ward said. “Interior Alaska has a long, deep and rich history of military and community partnerships. The military represents about 30% of our people and economy, and our community boasts one of the nation’s highest rates of veterans per capita. We take pride in supporting the military at all levels—service members, families, transitioning service members and veterans. Fairbanks is known as the Golden Heart City, and this recognition is a testament to our ability of ensuring all thrive in America’s Last Frontier.”

Communities are chosen through a competitive nomination process based on community building efforts, such as educational and employment opportunities, and support and collaboration with neighboring military installations.
