From fundraising and proposal writing to hands-on electronics recycling and volunteer management to community outreach, there is never a dull moment in the day of the ED.     The Executive Director (ED) is responsible for leading the vision and daily operation of Green Star of Interior Alaska (Green Star). The ED is committed to Green Star’s mission to encourage and enable our community to reduce waste and increase recycling.

    The ED will be expected to develop knowledge of Green Star’s programs, operations, and business plans. The ED will ensure that the organization has a long-term strategy which achieves its mission, and toward which it makes consistent and timely progress.

    • Provides leadership in program development, organizational and financial plans with the Board of Directors and staff.
    • Carries out plans and policies authorized by the Board
    • Engages, recruits and maintains fulfilling relationships with volunteers
    • Maintains official records and documents, and ensures compliance with federal, state and local regulations in a timely manner
    • Maintains a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in local recycling efforts and green business practices
    • Understands and maintains contractual obligations with a variety of entities
    • Facilitates, maintains and builds positive relationships within our community

    Salary: $20/hour (with potential for advancement) | Exempt
    Hours: Part-Time (30 hours/week with potential to expand to Full-Time)

    Fundraising & Communications (50%)

    • Maintains current and develops new fundraising strategies
    • Researches, develops, and writes grant proposals to existing and new donors
    • Expands existing donor network with individuals, businesses, and community organizations
    • Represents Green Star to the community and acts as the primary public representative for the organization

    Leadership & Management (30%)

    • Manages current programs
    • Maintains and evaluates program goals and progress
    • Prepares and works within a comprehensive budget
    • Recruits and manages staff and volunteers
    • Engages, develops, and supports a strong Board of Directors

    Growth & Development (20%)

    • Expands Green Star’s presence in the community by developing promotional outreach


    Required Qualifications & Experience: *

    • Strong project management skills managing complex, multifaceted projects resulting in measurable successes and growth. Able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
    • Experience with fundraising, particularly with direct person-to-person or person-to-organization contact
    • Experience in business management
    • Experience hiring and effectively supervising staff
    • Experience working with local or regional organizations
    • Ability to effectively work on diverse teams or with a diverse range of people
    • Current driver’s license and a personal vehicle (use of personal vehicle is required to attend meetings and perform errands; mileage is reimbursed)
    • Must be able and willing to work some nights and weekends
    • Must be highly organized and able to work well with a high-performance, collaborative peer group
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with exceptional attention to details


    Preferred Qualifications & Experience*

    • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a related field
    • Training or experience in communications and/or public relations
    • Working knowledge of customer/constituent relationship management (CRM) databases such as Bloomerang
    • Working knowledge of bookkeeping software for tracking and summarizing organizational expenses and income


    Working Conditions: *

    • Perform tasks while sitting, standing, and walking
    • Will occasionally be required to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds
    • Required to work with the public including public speaking for audiences of several hundred
    • Required to work some weekends and occasional holidays
    • Travel required to support specific events and fundraising efforts (approximately 10%)
