    Job Description

    Are you looking to help bring more recycling to the city of Fairbanks? Apply to work at Green Star! Working collaboratively with the Executive Director (ED), the Program Director will be responsible for overseeing two of Green Star of Interior Alaska’s key programs: Event Recycling and Education. In this newly established role, the Program Director will be responsible for the successful development and implementation of each program, working closely with two Board committees and community volunteers.

     

    Salary: $18/hour

    Hours: This is a part-time position (flexible 20-30 hours per week)

    General Program Direction (10%):

    • Contribute to the development of short- and long-term operating plans for Green Star’s Event Recycling and Education programs

    • Monitor progress, assure adherence to plans and evaluate performance

     

    Event Recycling (40%):

    • Secure annual contracts with Green Star’s four current event recycling obligations

    • Market the program to other event organizers in Fairbanks, developing both print and digital marketing material

    • Plan bin location and pick-up route and schedule with facilities manager at each event

    • Arrange and lead teams of volunteers to complete the current contract obligations, picking up and sorting the recycling at each event

    • Coordinate drop off of recyclable material at Central Recycling Facility, tracking weights and reporting them back to event coordinator and Green Star Board

    • Work with the ED to seek out and cultivate individual and corporate sponsors for the Event Recycling Program

    • Investigate a change to borough ordinances requiring event recycling within their facilities and their vendors

    • Coordinate logistics for Event Recycling Board Committee and engage committee members in program work

     

    Education (40%):

    • Help update Earth Day Every Day curriculum to match current recycling opportunities in Fairbanks, and have two full curriculum kits available during the 2019-20 school year.

    • Lead a teachers workshop on the Earth Day Every Day curriculum at the FNSBSD Teacher Inservice Day August 15th.

    • Visit the three middle schools in the FNSBSD to introduce the Earth Day Every Day curriculum and kits to teachers.

    • Integrate curriculum materials kit into the FNSBSD BEST Homeschool Program curriculum list.

    • Present curriculum materials kit and outcomes to the FNSB Sustainability Commission as a demonstration of progress on their FNSB Sustainability Plan.

    • Present curriculum to Alaska Cross Content Conference in October, 2019

    • Collaborate with Fairbanks Children’s museum or Folk School to host electronics recycling education kids camp in the summer

    • Create a “What is inside our computers” classroom and warehouse tour for homeschoolers and high school students

    • Coordinate logistics for Outreach/Education Board Committee and engage committee members in program work

     

    Volunteer Coordination (10%):

    • Assist with the development of public relations and communications strategies to support program goals, increase community awareness and recruit volunteers

    • Train new volunteers on safety and various aspects of volunteering with Green Star

    • Supervise volunteers by articulating expectations, displaying model behavior, maintaining open lines of communication and being clear about roles and relationships

    • Plan an annual volunteer recognition party

     

    Required Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

    This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual with team management experience to grow proven programs and develop new goals. The successful candidate will partner with the ED and work collaboratively the entire staff and numerous volunteers.

    • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and internet-based applications; database management experience

    • Strong project management skills managing complex, multifaceted projects resulting in measurable successes and growth. Able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

    • Must be highly organized and able to work well with a high-performance, collaborative peer group

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with exceptional attention to details

    • At least two years of program management experience.

    • Demonstrated background or interest in education.

    • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a commitment to Green Star’s mission to reduce waste and increase recycling in Interior Alaska

    • Able to work with a variety of populations, including 13-17-year-olds and senior citizens

    • Must be willing to work some nights and weekends

    • Knowledge of the recycling industry and sustainability in general helpful. Bachelor’s Degree strongly preferred
