    The Academic Advising Center & Career Services are seeking to add a dynamic individual to join the team as a Career & Academic Advisor. This position will work with students on career planning and guidance, assist in major exploration, provide career interview preparation and practice, job search assistance, as well as career event planning, development, outreach, and implementation. Starting pay for this salaried position is an hourly equivalent of $26.08.

     

    Duties:

     

    1515% Program Administration: Maintain web presence, publicity, and job search site/ programs. Maintain data and generate and distribute reports as required. Maintain Career Services website resources while updating for trends. May supervise and lead student employees.Essential
    3535% Career & Academic Advising: Work independently with current, prospective, new, and returning students on educational and career planning and major exploration in collaboration with the Academic Advising Center. Provide career guidance, job search assistance, resume, cover letter writing, and interview support. Administer, score, and interpret major/career, learning styles, and basic skills assessment programs and use judgment when advising for courses, majors, and careers. Exercise judgment to develop, apply and interpret major/career exploration & planning, learning styles, and basic skills enhancement programs to facilitate student self-knowledge and discovery. Apply and interpret assessment instruments requiring practitioner certification (i.e. Strong Interest Inventory & Myers Briggs Personality Type). Remain current with student development theories, UAF major and graduation requirements, international, national, and statewide employment trends as well as career-specific academic program requirements and student needs through research in professional publications, and networks. Support Academic Advising Center and Division of General Studies advising and retention efforts. Actively participate on university committees.Essential
    5050% Program Planning, Development, Outreach, and Implementation: Evaluate and assess programs and services, including job and career development, presentations, panels, and workshops for students, faculty, and staff. Coordinate and actively collaborate with campus-wide departments for advising, internship, and career-related events such as Accounting Recruitment Week, and Engineering-specific job fair, etc. Organize and implement employer recruiting events and career fairs as well as assist in the coordination of scheduled interviews with UAF students and employers. Job fairs typically happen in both the fall and spring semesters. Develop strong employer networks and advocate on behalf of UAF students to develop job opportunities. Develop and evaluate internship and job shadow programs with UAF departments and local employers. Market opportunities to students and employers at UAF and community events through the use of the Handshake platform.     KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
    Knowledge of student development theory, academic and career advising, in a university setting. Ability to communicate effectively in person and in writing. Knowledge of best practices, federal and state laws, and legal issues associated with and applicable to student services and higher education, including FERPA. Excellent active listening, intercultural competency, and conflict resolution skills to establish rapport and provide appropriate positive and negative feedback to students.     employers, the university community, and students. Ability to troubleshoot situations to determine the best course of action. Ability to interpret information to determine and develop relevant educational and career plans.     TYPICAL EXPERIENCE:
    Three years of relevant experience in an educational setting.

    REQUIRED EDUCATION OR TRAINING:
    Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.

    This position is a full-time, 40 hours per week, 10-month, salaried position at Grade 79, $26.08 hourly equivalent DOE, complete with a competitive salary and UA employee benefits package.
