Les Sylphides, the ballet has no story. A poet dances among magical creatures in the moonlight. Sylphides are supernatural creatures of such beauty and charm that anyone who sees them is immediately fascinated. Of course, since they are not real, it is impossible to capture them. They represent dreams or thoughts that we might imagine, but cannot get hold of. In Les Sylphides the movement of the dancers and the care with which it seems to make the music become visible, creates a mood that invites us to invent a story of our own. Three other pieces will be presented in the second part of the program. Classical Symphony is an abstract, neo-classical ballet in four movements using fourteen dancers. It is abstract because it has no storyline, and the neo-classic style shows off the classical ballet training while maintaining modernity in form. Through Section Three is a new repertory piece that uses classical ballet paired with contemporary movement to express variations on three central themes. Four Carefree Capers, is a new work set on Jr. Company with some Apprentice and Company members with percussion music by several composers, utilizing primarily xylophone and marimba paired with stylized jazz movements from the mid-twentieth century.
