Susan Henrichs was born and raised in Anchorage. She earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Washington and a Ph.D. from the MIT-Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Joint Program. In 1982\, Susan returned to Alaska as an Assistant Professor of Chemical Oceanography with the Institute of Marine Science\, now part of the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences.
