Temple Grandin will share her own experience with autism as well as her experience as an animal scientist to deliver extraordinary insights into how animals think\, act\, and feel. UAF?s Department of Veterinary Medicine is hosting this talk. Autistic people can often think the way animals think. Grandin sees autism as a kind of way station on the road from animals to humans ? putting autistic people in the perfect position to translate ?animal talk.? In this talk\, Grandin will explore animal pain\, fear\, aggression\, love\, friendship\, communication\, learning\, and\, yes\, even animal genius. Not only are animals much smarter than anyone ever imagined\, in some cases animals are out-and-out brilliant. Grandin is a professor of animal science at Colorado State University with more than 30 years of experience researching animal behavior. She became world-famous after using her gift of observation to develop more humane animal handling procedures in beef cattle feedlots and slaughter houses. More than half the United State?s cattle ranches use her designs. Grandin attributes her success to her tenacity and a mind that she says acts like a Google search engine set to look for pictures. This allows her to see the tiny details that make a big difference when studying what stresses or calms an animal.
