Mission Statement:
The Education Committee serves to advise Chamber members on matters of education that relate to the business community and promote a quality educational system.

2010 PROGRAM OF WORK

Goals for the Year

  • Promote collaborative educational efforts in the community by participating with the FNSB School District, the University of Alaska Fairbanks, UAF/Tanana Valley Campus, the FNSB Assembly, Legislators, and GFCC’s Governmental Relations Committee to advocate for adequate support and funding for education programs
  • Tie-in community involvement in public education
  • Promote awareness by general Chamber membership about education and workforce development issues by periodically arranging engaging GML Presentations, contribute current information about committee issues and concerns to Chamberline, and keep Chamber members informed about community meetings, conferences, and legislative hearings relating to Education and Workforce Development through use of 30-second and 5-minute spotlights

Programs & Projects for the Year

  • Positive Picketing: Promote and organize a positive picketing session for FNSBSD teachers as they return to school
  • GFCC Scholarship: Promote and organize award of GFCC scholarship for graduating high school senior planning to attend UAF or UAF/Tanana Valley Campus
  • Promote FNSB School District’s School-Business Partnership Program: Sponsor Annual Recognition Breakfast for School-Business Partners
  • Welcome New & Returning UAF Students and their Families & Friends: Provide electronic copy of a welcome sign for businesses to print and display in their place of business at the beginning of the academic year during new student orientation. UAF Orientation will design a sign based on the year’s theme, leaving space for the business to customize it to their organization, and the GFCC will distribute the sign with a message from the Education Committee
  • Provide 2 – 3 GML program recommendations
